Ephedra

Free Recalled Drugs Case Review

Ephedra is a naturally occurring substance that was discovered 5,000 years ago. It was noticed that on top of increasing metabolism, the substance also helps to relax air passageways that can help treat asthma. The substance also helps to aid in the recovery of a cold and relieve edema.

Over the past several years, Ephedra has become a popular ingredient in dietary supplements, athletic enhancement, and weight loss aids. The drug occurs naturally in several plant species. The active ingredient in Ephedra is ephedrine, which is an amphetamine-like compound that stimulates both the nervous system and heart. The substance is also popular among practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.

In 2004, the FDA decided to ban all substances that use Ephedra due to the unnecessary risk of illness and injury that it provides to consumers. Evidence has also shown that the compound is not very effective either, except for short-term weight loss. The substance may also be responsible for an increase in blood pressure as well as the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Before imposing the ban, the FDA sent warning letters out to all companies that are currently marketing Ephedra based products. They were especially stern on those companies that claim athletic enhancement because there have been no scientific studies to back up these claims. Also before imposing the ban, the FDA held a scientific study to show whether the substance was actually beneficial to weight loss or other fitness goals. The studies have shown that there is no proof that the substance will actually improve the user's athletic performance. In the long run, it shows that the substance may actually hinder performance.

Combining Ephedra with other stimulants such as caffeine may increase the user's risk of heart disease. Use of these substances in combination may also result in insomnia, headaches, tremors, heart palpitations, and stroke. To date there have been several reported deaths associated with the abuse of this substance.

All supplements that use Ephedra are bound by this ban and must stop selling their products immediately. Products that are not affected by this ban include herbal teas, traditional Chinese remedies, and drugs that are used to treat asthma and bronchitis.

While traditional treatments are not bound by the ban, it is a good idea to talk to your health care provider about the benefits and risks of undergoing a treatment that incorporates Ephedra. Those most affected by the ban will be those marketing their products to the fitness market with the goal of athletic enhancement or weight loss.
