Advanced Medical Optics Complete Moisture Plus Recall

[5/25/2007] - Complete® MoisturePlus™ Multipurpose, a commonly used contact lens and multipurpose solution manufactured and distributed by Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), has been voluntarily recalled due to the high volume of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) that has been reportedly contracted by users. Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a corneal infection caused by a microscopic water-borne ameba and is often accompanied by a bacterial eye infection.  The Center for Disease Control reports that out of 39 soft contact lens wearers who became infected with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) since January of 2005, 21 of those patients were using Complete® MoisturePlusTM Multipurpose Solutions. According to the CDC, the risk of contracting this infection is seven times more likely with use of Complete® MoisturePlusTM products.

Symptoms
Though this infection is usually considered rare by Ophthalmologists, its severity can quickly progress. Side effects will vary by patient and may include, but are not limited to:

• Visual impairment or blindness (mild to severe)
• Corneal Ulceration
• Continual redness/irritation of the eye
• Persistent eye pain

Dangers
If not properly diagnosed and treated, Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) can progress to infect other parts of the body, including the brain. Without treatment a more serious condition can evolve called Granulomatous amebic encephalitis. This advanced form of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) can consist of:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Stiff neck
• Change in Equilibrium (loss of balance)
• Vomiting
• Seizures
• Coma
• Death

These symptoms may occur over an extended period of time or progress quickly dependant upon the health of the individual. Seeking professional medical attention in the early stages of the infection is the most effective way to determine the best form of treatment.

Treatment
Several antibiotics and antifungal medications may be prescribed to treat the infection based on the symptoms that are being experienced and the determined severity of each individual case.
