Doctors, nurses and the people who run the health care system in America are both legally and morally obliged to give a good standard of care. The United States has some of the most highly trained doctors, nurses and medical staff in the world as well as one of the best and most advanced health care systems. It seems to make little sense then the USA also leads the world in medical errors.

In America, medical errors are estimated to cause between 40,000 and 90,000 unnecessary deaths per year. Medical errors also result in about one and three billion extra dollars spent each year, due to prolonged stays in the hospital as a result from injuries or sicknesses incurred from medical errors.

The most common medical errors include misdiagnosis or making an error when diagnosing a patient. Mistakes with drugs lead to medical errors, either the wrong dosage, wrong time or wrong patient can produce disastrous results.

Giving a lethal drug combination is another form of medical error. Sometimes certain drugs react adversely together causing the patient to suffer from unnecessary pain side effects or even death.

Surgical mistakes are another form of medical error. There have been extreme cases where a doctor has amputated the wrong limb. It is true that there is risk in any procedure and we are all human, capable of making mistakes.
