Defective Seat Belts & Injuries
Seat belts were introduced in the 1960's and have been proven to save lives. Seat belts should be worn at all times while traveling in a car. Most states now make it a requirement to wear your seatbelts and have the right to impose fines should you fail to do so. Despite this there are numerous seat belt injuries every year. One of the main causes of seat belt injuries are poorly designed seat belts. Some studies show that wearing a poorly designed seat belt can actually be worse that not wearing one at all. Poorly designed seat belts result in serious seat belt injuries and even deaths.
One of the biggest failures of the seatbelts is the lap belt only system. These do not do enough to protect a person and can cause serious injury to the pelvis. When the lap belts are defective, a rear end collision can cause the person to be propelled upwards and back causing a seat injury. There are also cases of people being propelled upward and out of a window.
Another common seat belt injury results from head-on collisions. The belts cause the person to go down and forward causing the neck and spinal cord to suffer injury. The seat belt was designed to keep us safe and reduce injuries and do most of the time when designed and installed properly. If not the very device that was designed to protect us can actually help cause a variety of seat belt injuries.
The manufacturers of seat belts have a duty to ensure that their product is safe, performs the jobs that it is required to do and does not cause further injury. When they fail to do so they can be held accountable.

A personal injury lawyer can help advise you on your case and what types of compensation you can claim. They will be best equipped to speak to you about the rules and regulations regarding your particular state.
