What Is the GM Ignition Recall?

The most recent recall involving GMC cars stems from crashes that occurred across the country in which many people have been injured and there have been at least 13 reported deaths and involves nearly 2.6 million vehicles.

GMC, in its recall notice, issued this warning to affected motorists: "If you are driving an affected vehicle, until the ignition recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that you remove all items from your key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable) should also be removed from your key ring.".

According to information provided about the recall, the cars involved in the recall can without warning suddenly switch out of the “run” position while being driven.

This can have fatal consequences: The engine and electrical system might shut down and affect the power steering, power brakes and airbags.

FDA will continue to evaluate the safety of olmesartan-containing products and will communicate again if additional information becomes available.

What Will Be the Fallout from the GMC Ignition Recall?

GMC announced the recall in February, 2014 and expanded on it in March. Consumer groups, victims groups, government regulators and elected officials have all expressed concerns about these dangers and some investigations are likely to follow.

One key question to be answered is why General Motors officials, who might have been informed about the dangerous ignition problems as early as 2001, allowed so much time to pass and so many motorists to be endangered, did not notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and issue a recall earlier.

As The New York Times reported: "G.M.’s legal battles are only beginning and will probably drag on for years. Dozens of cases — including suits over personal injury, wrongful death and economic damages — have been filed against G.M. over its failure to disclose the ignition safety issue for more than a decade after it became aware of it.

There has been at least one investor lawsuit. Another suit targets specific G.M. employees by name, accusing them of fraud, conspiracy and gross negligence. At least 15 economic damages cases seek class-action status. A panel of federal judges will hold a hearing in Chicago on May 29 to determine whether to transfer all of them to a single federal court for pretrial proceedings."
