The company has new data that shows the model ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System are prone to early failure. A hip recall is now in affect and lawyers are seeking people hurt from a defective hip implant device.

According to the new data, Within five years of implantation, about 12 percent of people who got the ASR resurfacing device, and 13 percent of people who got the ASR total hip replacement, have had them surgically removed and replaced with a different product.

Hip replacement surgery:

Hip replacement surgery has become more and more prevalent in the United States in recent years as the population has aged collectively and as the process of obtaining and recovering from a hip replacement procedure has become easier. This development is seen as a savior by many who had struggled for years with chronic hip pain that began to take hold of patients for a variety of reasons, and research and development in this area of medical expertise has continued to move forward at a fast pace.

There are many types and brand name manufactures of these types of devices known in the medical community as "metal-to-metal implant". DePuy Orthopedics makes a hip replacement product known as the ASR artificial hip implant.

Currently most orthopedic surgeons are not recommending this device due to problems with possible tissue or bone damage, which complicates the matter.

Hip Implant Warning:

In March of 2010 DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, issued a warning that this device was failing only after a couple of years after a person has one installed. The FDA received close to 300 complaints, starting in early 2008, from people with the ASR hip implant.

Problems with metal-to-metal implants

Metallosis after metal-on-metal Total Hip Implant surgery may be more common than originally thought.

Studies from The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American). 2006;88:1183-1191 have shown that  patients who have been treated with a contemporary metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty and have suggested that metal hypersensitivity associated with an immunologic response to metal may be of etiologic importance. We evaluated the results and histologic findings in patients who had undergone revision of a failed contemporary metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty.

Anywhere in any situation where a base metal comes into contact with other base metals, think car pistons, friction occurs, and without a form of lubricate, the heat created (friction) creates rapid wear down of parts.

If this happens in a car engine, the bits of metal are generally collected in the oil filter, but when this happens in a person's body, there is not outlet for the metal debris to go.

The body tries in vain to move or dispense with the metal parts. It has been seen that this metal debris can be absorbed by the tissue and bones surrounding the hip.
