The FDA warning listed several brand names of metoclopramide-containing products, that may lead to Tardive Dyskinesia and they include.
- Reglan Tablets
- Reglan Oral Disintegrating Tablets
- Reglan Injection
- Metoclopramide Oral Solution
Although many different brand names have hit the market in recent years that are intended to help manage these problems, there appears to be one ingredient above others that is used in these products – metoclopramide.
Reglan and Tardive Dyskinesia
Recent reports have come about that highlight a potential link between patients who use these Reglan products and the development of a condition known as tardive dyskinesia.
Tardive Dyskinesia Condition:
This condition is one that features the following common symptoms, according to a public health warning recently issued by the FA:
- Involuntary/ repetitive movements of the extremities
- Facial tics
- Lip smacking, pursing and puckering
- Face Grimacing
- Tongue protrusion
- Rapid eye movements or blinking
- Impaired movement of the fingers.
- Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
Unfortunately, these symptoms are rarely reversible and there is no accepted treatment for them at this time.
FDA Warning for Metoclopramide:
When a substance draws unwanted attention in cases such as this one, the FDA has a few remedies available. At this point, two have been executed. The first is the requirement of a ‘black box warning’ that’s to be affixed to all products containing metoclopramide that must detail the risk described above. The second remedy is the requirement that a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy, or REMS, be done. The REMS is designed to weigh the risks vs. the reward of using this product and to provide additional warning to users of these products.
Metoclopramide (Generic name for Reglan)
Metoclopramide is a substance that helps to speed the movement of a patient’s stomach muscles, thereby shortening the time in which it takes for the stomach contents to empty into the intestines. Unfortunately, it also appears that metoclopramide is the ingredient that’s been linked to the development of serious problems in those who have used these substances.

I have taken reglan a couple times in the past year. On the night of April 6 2011 I started filling like my blood sugar was going low, I checked it and it was fine about 16 hours later in was in the ER my whole body was shaking I was gave different meds to get through it. I was told then it was due to the reglan I had been on for about 3 weeks. I still have trouble with my eyes and real bad headaches. When I ask my doctor if it could be from the reglan she will not give me a straight answer tho she did have me to stop the reglan

I went to the hospital and was admitted for 6 days because of stomach pain in 1986, I was 15 yrs old. On the 5th night the doc said I had ulcers and gave me Reglan and Tagamet, about 30 min later my head started turning, after a few min instead of turning my head the back of my neck started getting tight and a min later my head was going back as far as it could, I had no control. I started shaking and sweating. Back then they didn't tell the patient about side effects, at age 15 I thought, "I control my own muscles so I'm doing this to myself. If the nurses find out I'll be locked up in a padded room!!" so I took my IV stand with me into the bathroom and locked the door, I was on the floor shaking and sweating with my head back so far that I couldn't swallow and was choking on my own saliva. I came out and got back in bed and pushed the call button and asked for another shot of Demerol thinking I'd go to sleep and this would go away. It did not. The next day they gave me another dose with breakfast and sent me home. 2 hours later my Dad busted into the bathroom and found me. Back at the hospital it took a couple hours and several inj. of Demerol and Benedryl before I passed out, while giving me those the nurse had to get blood from the artery in my wrist between bones and under tendons so she was bending my wrist back and telling me to hold still! My whole body was trembling!!! I could not!! When I woke up it had caused my period to start 3 weeks early. No x-rays of my neck were done till a couple years ago I found a doc that would listen, I have 2 old fractures in my neck, bone broken off the vertebra and floating in there. I can't turn my head very far, it has been painful since I was 16, I've gone to PT several times now, I've taken meds for restless lag that made me sick so I don't take anything for it, my hands and legs shake I had carpel tunnel surgery but they still shake and I still drop things, I get migraines that start with my neck getting tight then hurting and then on comes the migraine! The Dr. I have now says, "we only have 5 minutes so what's more important to you this minute, that or the refill for pain meds?" I got shot in the hip and leg as a child and can't walk without pain meds now. So I can't get her to address the symptoms to see if this is what's wrong with me. What do I do now??

My mother is suffering from tardive dyskinesia and I am interested in joining a class action in alabama. I have her POA, have thoroughly researched detailed and know that she was on the drug for an extended period of time without the doctor checking or changing the med. I would appreciate being contacted.

I WAS ON TOPAMAX 300MG, ZOLOFT 200MG & KLONOPIN 2MG A DAY FOR OVER 10 YEARS. LAST YEAR, I WEANED OFF OF THESE MEDICATIONS DUE TO THEM NO LONGER WORKING EFFECTIVELY. I THEN DEVELOPED TONGUE THRUSTING AND MORE RECENTLY EYE TWITCHING. I BELIEVE I HAVE TARDIVE DYSKINESIA AND I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY OVERALL HEALTH. I TRIED GOING BACK ON THESE MEDS TO SEE IF IT WOULD CORRECT THESE BOTHERSOME MOVEMENTS BUT IT DID NOT WORK. NOW I AM ON NO MEDICATIONS FOR MY BI-POLAR OR PTSD AND MY MOODS ARE FLUCTUATING RAPIDLY AND MY MOUTH IS GETTING WORSE WITH MY GUMS VERY SORE. IT IS A VERY EMBARRASSING PROBLEM THAT I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING AND IT APPEARS THERE IS NO CURE!!!! CAN YOU HELP?

i was on Reglan for a short while. i am on anti-depressant's and anxity medication. i starting noticing that i would get very nerves over little things and i could not go into stores that were busy any more. i wanted to run in front of a car and i would just break down and cry for no reason.i screamed and yelled at my grand children and they were terrified of me i would have never done that and have not sense i took my self off of it. my anger is another issue i have a very serious anger problem but i have learned to control it, but i got so angry at a friend of mine that i chased him with a knife intending to hurt him. that would never have happened if i was not on reglan. i was taking 10 mg. four times a day and after five days of it and the way it made me feel and act i took myself off of it. yes there was problems with me just stopping taking it but it was better then taking it. to me the class action lawsuit is not about money it is about getting this drug off the market before it can hurt or damage anyone else.

I only took Reglan for i month and was having all kinds of problems with it. I had the facial tic, hallucinations, involuntary leg and arm movement. All of the symptoms started after the second dose. I contacted the doctor that put me on it and I was told at the time that the medicine can cross the brain barrier and it would go away in time to continue taking well I tried it for the 30 days and it never got better just worse. The doctor would not take me off of it so I flat told him I was not taking anymore and quit taking it.

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. My family doctor put me on nexium and reglan. Three days after my first dose I woke up with severe leg pain. Everyday it got worse. Went to the hospital they checked for blood clots and found nothing. So I have been calling my doctor for three days now. He wont return my calls. I can't walk due to the pain and swelling. My leg feels hard as a rock. Now it feels as if it is trying to spread to my other leg. I also have hallucinations of large bugs and uncontrollable movements from my arms and legs. If any one can help me please contact me at lindabowen91@gmail.com. I am going to the er once again to see if they can help me.
