Ocella birth control pills contain the generic drug that is used in brand names Yasmin and Yaz birth control. The drug contained in these birth control pills is generically called drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol.
There may not be much difference in the chemical makeup of Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella, but some women who have taken both versions claim that they have experienced different types of side effects while on Ocella.
Common Ocella side effects that have been mentioned tend to be nauseousness, dizziness and breast soreness when switching to Ocella from Yasmin use. Other women have had uncontrollable hunger, urinary tract infections, mood swings and possibly hormone imbalances.
Women should be aware that some pharmacies have been giving out Ocella in place of Yasmin and not noting this to the person. Even though generic is supposed to be identical there may be a slight difference in the birth control that are causing these side effects.
The medical community and the FDA has noted that there have been 50 deaths associated with women who have taken Ocella, Yaz, or Yasmin. Deaths have been mostly from heart attack, blood clots or pulmonary embolism.

| I have only been taking Ocella for two wks and started feeling bad on literally the first day. I had not been on any types of birth control for the past three years because they all had such horrible side effects. I was suffering from ammenorhea and my Dr. prescribed me a hormone pill to induce a period and then Ocello to regulate it. In the two wks I've been on them I've had the most excruciating lower abd pain and started bleeding again two days after my cycle went off. I have also been having minor headaches and extremely sensitive breast. I decided to look up the side effects and read opinions of other women and after reading many I am convinced that I am going to stop taking them. The abdominal pain is just too much. | |

| I have been on Ocella for 6 months now. Prior to that, I was on Yaz for 3 years. Prior to that, I was on OrthoTriCyclenLo. I developed a heart palpitation over the New Year holiday that I am now in the hospital for. I can only believe it is due to the pill, along with shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheadedness, and confusion. I was on a 24 hr heart monitor yesterday - the doctor is supposed to call with my results as soon as they come in. I am scared that my two children will be left without a mother due to the birth control pill OCELLA. I also have uncontrollable hunger, and have gained 15 pounds in the past 6 months. Unbelievable - don't you think someone could have told me that these pills have killed 50 women? I am getting off the pill, but have I done permanent damage to my heart? | |

| I've been on Ocella for nearly a year and have felt great. No side effects and I've actually felt quite balanced compared to other birth controls I've tried. It wasn't until my insurance decided to call it a brand name drug and changing my copay that I came to question it. I asked for a new birth control and my doctor was very confused to why it was suddenly being considered brand name. She called back a week later and said it was because of some lawsuit and said no more. i'm very disappointed my doctor didn't alert me to the warnings going on. It wasn't until two weeks later I saw a headline about the rising negative effects of Ocella and yaz. Thanks for looking out for me doc. | |

| I have been on Yasmin since it first hit our market.... My insurance automatically switch me to ocella when it came out and after two months i HAD to stop taking it. I got severe headaches on a DAILY basis, which went migrane 2-3 times a week. I also had nausia and extremely painful breasts. My Dr. re-wrote my Rx for NO generic so i could go back to Yasmin. | |

| I was on ocella at the beginning of last year and the mood swings were so severe that I was suicidal for weeks, and ended up unable to work for several months. I lost a relationship as well. It was horrid. | |

| I recently stopped taking Ocella so my husband and I can try to conceive. Since stopping I have had frequent mild headaches and constant cramping (obviously could be for other reasons, and possibly due to my body readjusting to life without hormone treatment) I took Ocella for about 6-8 months. While on the pill I ALWAYS had mid-month spotting. I also became noticeably more nauseas and often vomited during the night. However, once I took the pill earlier in the day the nausea decreased significantly. I also began to notice pressure around my heart area and went once to the emergency room. They told me everything looked ok, but I'm still experiences pressure around my heart, which I never had before taking the pill. Those are my only complaints about Ocella, and otherwise felt fine while on the pill. | |

| I had side effects from the birth control ocella. I have been very irritable and little bumps have been forming on my arms under the elbow. When I take the pill that starts your period the bumps go away, but when I start back on the yellow pill the bumps come back. My problem with this is my doctor makes me wait a long time to change my birth control, but the fear of that is that she may not let me change my pill or she may change it to the other ones that have the same problem. I also have mood swings such as being very sensitive like crying a lot for the most stupidest reasons, and being so irritable such as taking my anger out on my boyfriend over something stupid. Not like hitting but yelling and then crying over it.I get sad a lot but before this pill came into my life, I was very happy. Now I feel like I hate the world and I cry over it as well. Which to me is very stupid. However that isn't the only problem I've been having with the pill. I have been having headaches right before my period and a little weight gain. The last pill help me lose it and now I have to go threw it again. How depressing. I have never cried so much in my life since this pill came into my life. Life was great way before they introduced me to this new pill. All I want is to be happy again and not feel unsafe taking something that is suppose to keep you from having babies. I do fear every night when I go to bed if I am going to wake up the next morning because the pill in me seems to be a ticking time bomb. I hate doctors because all they want from you is your money and they don't seem to care about your health. The reason why my doctor put me on this pill is because it suppose to help lower testosterone and that is still my problem. All this unwanted hairs are still there. I still feel unsafe taking ocella because I have to wait until October 15 to try and change the pill and I don't plan on having babies. | |
