Free Defective Drugs Case Review

Minocycline is part of the family of antibiotics called tetracyclines. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic. Minocycline is a stronger version, and contains serum levels 2 to 4 times that of tetracyclines.

Created by the drug manufacturer Lederle Laboratories and distributed under the brand name Minocin.

It is used mostly for the treatment of acne in young adults. It is also used to treat lyme disease and other immune type illness. It works like many of the tetracyclines by halting the growth of bacteria.

My son had been on Solodyn for about 11 months when I realized his hair loss was caused by this. The Dr blew us off and said that my son was starting the male pattern hair loss- at 14 YEARS OLD! Give me a break. I am glad I found this site because one if his eyes had become "lazy" when he looks to the left- I really need to get this checked out as well.

I had been taking the acne medication, Minocycline for about 2 years when I started to get extremely bad headaches, fevers, chills, and episodes of painful shooting and burning sensations in my legs along with numbness in my fingers and toes and achy joints. For almost 5 months this continued with my doctors unable to find a reason for my ailments which seemed to come on aggressively. When I was out of town one day I had excruciating pain in my right lower leg with those same painful, burning, shooting sensations. I couldn't touch my leg, I couldn't get comfortable. The slightest touch of a finger would make me scream. I admitted myself in the ER the following day where they took test after test, blood work and tried to find some reasonable explanation for what had caused this. This being a nerve stroke in my leg. Within a couple weeks I was diagnosed with vasculitis. My form being know as Poly-arteritis Nodosa (PAN), but only after having an extremely painful nerve biopsy with the sample being sent and diagnosed at Stanford. I was then treated with a handful of medications, which did eventually treat my disease, but not without some adverse side effects, including; weight gain, hair loss and my most recent finding, infertility. I am angry that I was allowed to remain on this acne medication with no warning of what it could possibly do to me. My own doctor would never say it was Minocycline that caused my condition, but a doctor friend who is contracted through my hospital requested a copy of my medical record. She knew as soon as she saw that prescription on my file that thatâ??s what was causing my ailments. If not for her I would have continued to take this drug, which would have probably killed me. Along with PAN, I also had signs of my organs being affected. I'm 28 years young and trying for another child, but the Cytoxan they gave me to treat my Minocycline induced PAN, has made me infertile.

I took minocycline for acne for 6 weeks and developed severe pseudotumor cerebri or intracranial hypertension and went blind in one eye. After a craniotomy, regained most of the use of my eye. Several years later, a reoccuring episode happened after I gained weight my first semester of college. Ended up with another surgery to open the sheath around the left optic nerve this time.
