Dostinex Information

Dostinex is a drug manufactured by Pfizer, Inc., to treat the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease. Dostinex is also used in "off-label" treatments to counteract excessive generation of the hormone prolactin as well as male fertility problems, pituitary tumors, and certain menstrual problems.

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological condition that causes uncontrollable tremors, shaking, changes in mood or behavior, muscle rigidity, and loss of or slowing of physical movement.  The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates that there are approximately 500,000 people in the United States living with Parkinson’s disease, and doctors diagnose another 50,000 cases each year.

Unfortunately, an Italian study discovered that almost 25% of people with Parkinson’s that underwent Dostinex therapy suffered moderate to severe heart-valve damage.  Furthermore, a similar study conducted in Germany found out that Dostinex could cause leaky heart valves between five to seven times more often than patients taking different drugs to treat their condition.

Researchers and doctors at the Mayo Clinic asserted that the elevated risk of heart damage posed by both Dostinex and its generic version cabergoline are so great that no one with a heart condition should use them.  An article in the New England Journal of Medicine published in 2007 stated that:

"In conclusion, our study showed that treatment with either pergolide or cabergoline, particularly at daily doses greater than 3 mg and for periods of 6 months or longer, was associated with a substantially increased risk of newly diagnosed cardiac-valve regurgitation. There was no evidence of such an increase with the use of other dopamine agonists."

Other side effects of Dostinex include:

  • Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Leaky or damaged heart valves
  • Aortic or Mitral Valve injuries
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
