Chantix is a drug that is prescribed for people who want to stop smoking.
NEW FDA CHANTIX WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration has issued an announcement that the smoking cessation medicine Chantix (varenicline) may put some patients at risk of heart problems.
The agency has notified health care professionals and patients that the Prescribing Information for this drug product will be strengthened to inform the public that use of varenicline may be associated with a small, increased risk of certain cardiovascular adverse events in patients who have cardiovascular disease. This safety information will be added to the Warnings and Precautions section and the patient Medication Guide.
The FDA said it reviewed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 700 smokers with cardiovascular disease who were treated with Chantix or placebo. While cardiovascular adverse events were infrequent overall, certain events, including heart attack, were reported more frequently in patients treated with Chantix than in patients treated with placebo. The events included angina pectoris, nonfatal myocardial infarction, need for coronary revascularization, and new diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease or admission for a procedure for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease.
The FDA said it is continuing to evaluate the cardiovascular safety of Chantix and is requiring the manufacturer to conduct a large, combined analysis (meta-analysis) of randomized, placebo-controlled trials. The agency said it will update the public when additional information is available.
The agency said health care professionals should be aware that smoking is an independent and major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and smoking cessation is of particular importance in this patient population. The known benefits of Chantix should be weighed against its potential risks when deciding to use the drug in smokers with cardiovascular disease.
Chantix has some disturbing side effects that may lead to psychiatric problems requiring long term treatment for persistent depression. Some people taking Chantix have suicidal thoughts and or homicidal thoughts.
Some reports of people on Chantix have also had some medical conditions such as Steven Johnson Syndrome or liver damage and blackouts or seizures.
Accidents while on Chantix may include car accidents, fall down injury from passing out.
Chantix works by blocking the nicotine receptors in the brain – thus halting the cravings for smoking, but users should understand the side effects and risks of taking Chantix.
Chantix also works by stimulating the release of low levels of dopamine and other chemicals in your brain to help reduce the signs and symptoms of withdrawal. Because of the nature of how your brain chemicals work, there are some side effects to taking Chantix.
What are the Side Effects of Chantix or Zyban?
People in clinical trials have reported these known side effects.
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Changes to how flavors taste
- Wild and vivid abnormal dreams
- Thoughts of suicide
- Depression
- Mood swings
Chantix Zyban FDA Warning.
Back in 2008 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory in 2008 that health care professionals, those taking Chantix, and the families of those taking Chantix should be alert to and monitor for changes in mood and behavior in people taking Chantix. Signs and symptoms may include anxiety, nervousness, tension, depressed mood, unusual behaviors, and thinking about or attempting suicide.

I took Chantix for about a year (my psychiatrist wanted to make sure that I was kicking the smoking habit once and for all and I did). This was 5 years ago. The only side effect I had during taking Chantix were very vivid dreams. I could deal with that. I took Chantix until April 2008. On April 4th, 2008, I had a severe car accident. To this day I don't know what happened except that I obviously blacked out. I've never had a blackout experience in my entire life. This year I found out about other people having blackouts while being on Chantix. I looked up my old prescriptions and found out that on the day of my accident I either just stopped taking Chantix or took one of the few tablets I had left. I can't tell for sure. But there's no doubt in my mind that Chantix caused my blackout. I also have serious memory problems that I never connected to Chantix. Reading some of the comments of others I noticed that I have very similar memory problems, crazy stuff. One day I was unable to open a can of soda, I couldn't remember how to do it. That's pretty insane. If there's ever a class action suit, I'll be there.

I thought this would help me quit smoking again. Used it a few years ago and quit. Stupidly, I started back up after almost 4 years. I ask my Dr. to prescribe it to me and my smoking started to decrease, my sense of taste was nasty though. Then on November 13 th my son was in my bedroom white as a ghost telling me he had the EMT squad on their way. I got all upset and said there was no reason for that and why did he call them. He screamed at me saying I had a seizure. I didn't believe him and when they got there I didn't want to go until they started asking me questions and I could not answer them. That was the weirdest feeling I ever had in my life. So I went. They took me to our local hospital where I ended up having another seizure. I bit my tongue hard enough it had teeth imprints on the left side and my body felt like it had been beaten to a pulp. My blood pressure bottom number was 108 and I felt horrible. I had to do all these test and now I'm stuck with high dollar bills. I wanted to save money by quit smoking but it ended up costing me a fortune with the side effect and I'm a person whose job doesn't have health insurance. So now I'm doomed and depressed. I'd advise you not to take this medication. Unfortunately, I did not quit smoking I just ended up with more problems. Be cautious of this drug. Respectfully, Melody Evancho

In April or May 2009 I took Chantix for 2 weeks, in an attempt to quit smoking. I admit, the Chantix I took at that time was not prescribed to me, but to someone else. In June of 2009, I suffered heart attack symptoms, but because I am uninsured, didnâ??t seek medical attention. Again in September of 2009 I suffered these same symptoms. At that time I did go to the hospital for treatment. While there for 20 hrs I was given several tests, nitroglycerin and observation. At discharge, I was told that I had suffered from my heart not beating in full beats, but was fluttering instead. I was also told I suffered from unstable angina. A few weeks later, when going to my own Doctor, he informed me the test results indicated a blockage in the left side of my heart with signs of muscle damage. It was at that time, I had my own Doctor prescribe me Chantix. When I made that request, I was unaware of the symptoms I had already suffered were reported (or soon to be widely reported) side effects of Chantix. I began taking the Chantix and could deal with the weird dreams and my family could cope with my mood swings, but I was forced to quit taking it when I began suffering severe bouts of rage and massive issues with my memory. The rage went away after stopping Chantix, but my memory has not improved and continues to actually get worse. By the time a Cardiologist did a heart cath in December of 2009, there was no blockage to be treated, I have no clue if the aspirin I take daily dissolved it, or if the tests that had been done in September 2009 were flawed in some way. It wasnâ??t until doing Internet research recently, that I learned just how widely reported the heart/chest pain and memory issues are. I am concerned for my long-term prognosis, as I continue to see gradual memory slips that I should not be having at age 44. A few weeks ago, I had to look at paperwork to remind myself how to spell my 18 year old daughters name, I had to use a calculator to figure out my age at my birthday in July. This past school year, I became unable assist my daughter with her 3rd grade math homework, even some of the simplest math tasks were beyond my mental grasp, and realized I was having other issues remembering other 3rd grade subjects to assist her. I now struggle to cook/bake because of the math and fractions used, it takes me sometimes 15 minutes or longer to figure out how to double something or to mentally formulate a solution (ie: to measure the base amount twice). I struggle to even make cool-aid because I have to regularly ask if the pitcher I am holding is a half gallon, and if not, then how much does it hold â?? I can no longer remember, and I should, I have been using that pitcher for the last 6 years. I ask the same questions over and over, because I either donâ??t remember asking, or I know I have asked, but canâ??t remember the answer. There are several other instances that I, myself recognize, but, I have no clue how many others times I donâ??t remember because I just donâ??t rememberâ??â??. I still have to use nitroglycerin for chest pains, but have not been able to continue medical treatment for it or to seek medical treatment and testing for my memory issues. Because, as I said earlier, I am uninsured and lack the resources to continue seeing a Doctor, nor do I qualify for medical assistance.

I started taking chantix in April 2008 after a bout with pneumonia. By day 21 I had gone 92 conseq. hours with zero sleep...I was shaking and told my family my body was turning on me and I am dying. At 1:10AM on the fourth night I had a very violent grand mal seizure and stopped breathing. My husband had to do rescue breathing to bring me back. I was taken to the ER where I had another seizure at 5AM and again at 7AM. My neurologist ordered tests which confirmed yes I had the seizures but I also did not have and underlying seizure disorder. I was an an adult A student headed for graduate school when this occured. I now have lost 4 yrs of education as I can no longer access the learned information to continue my education. I have also had many allergic reactions to medications I could take prior to the chantix. I am tired and fed up. I have panic attacks everyday all day now and can no longer control my bipolar due to taking chantix. I now have bouts of depresssion every mth instead of once of a year.

I started Chantix in November 08, on the 7th day I started having seizures. I have never had a seizure in my life until I took Chantix. My seizures have progressed from 1-2 a day to up to 10 times in a day and I was recently hospitalized in ICU (which hasnâ??t been the first time since 08). The doctorsâ?? state that I will more than likely have them for the rest of my life and that Chantix is probably the cause. I have lost my job because of seizures. I have been ordered by physicians not to drive and my husband can't leave me by myself. The seizures have seriously affected my life to where I canâ??t function normally or without assistance. Since my last hospital stay, I believe that I have also had a stroke after a major seizure. I am on my third medication, which doesnâ??t seem to help control the seizures; I feel that it is killing me more and more every day. Yesterday alone, I had 6 seizures, five of them being back to back.

I took Chantix for 6 months because that is how long it took me to get me from smoking. I had quit for 3 years couldn't stand the smell of cigarettes and then went to a few restaurants to an old friends house and I was noticing more and more I could stand the smell and I was wanting a cigarette, so I asked my husband to drive me to the store. Mind you this was back in 2008 of February. I have anxiety issues, I have high liver enzymes and I am not a drinker, I have depression worse then I ever had. I have thought of committing suicide more then I ever have! I have been off and on different meds for depression and anxiety. Not sure if this can be related to chantix... I am going to be having a biopsy on my liver sometime hopefully this year.

On 2-5-07 I was prescribed Chantix from my doctor. The medicine did help me quit smoking but I have been having tematic high and low mood swings ever since. I have had a history of depression. Now I have Very bad Anxiety, worse Depression and thought of Suicide. I have been under many different kinds of medicine after I have been on Chantix. My doctor finally told me that I need help from a psychologist. I went to psychologist and I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar Type II. The doctor got me on Lithium for my disorder. I have never had this major life treating mood disorder and I believe it started after I took Chantix. I have proof of the doctor prescribing Chantix and I know where I went to fill the order. I was watching TV and saw that there is a Law Suite on Chantix and I have almost every symptom and I have documentation to prove it. I am looking for a lawyer to represent me.

I took Chantix in August 2008 for 2 1/2 weeks and although I have quit smoking, I have been dealing with anxiety and a little depression since October 2008. I am presently taking 2 different medicines for the anxiety. I am having a problem keeping it under control and the 3 out of 4 medicines that I had perscribed to me, did not work. I am currently on the 4th one now and weaning off the 3rd one. I have suffered from a little bit of depression but have not yet had to take any medicine for that.
