Bayer Diabetes Care Contour Test Strips

Recall Specifics

On December 27, 2007, the FDA published a notice on its Web site that Bayer Diabetes Care was initiating a voluntary recall of several lots of its 'test strips' that were tied to its main diabetes management component, known as the Contour TS Blood Glucose Meter.

The specific text of the press release can be found here, and it should be noted that no issue has been identified with the meter itself - only the strips that are used with it.

Below are the necessary specifics of the recall, but if you've been harmed as a result of using these test strips, contact your doctor to schedule an immediate medical evaluation in order to determine if any problem has arisen as a result of using them, and then contact a defective products attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation.

Bayer Test Strip Lot Numbers Recalled:

The product that's been recalled has been limited to several lots of test strips. According to the press release, the lots affected are and can be found as follows:

"The lot numbers can be found on the bottom of the box and on the side of the bottle containing the strips. The affected lots begin with WK followed by the characters 7D, 7E, 7F or 7G and then followed by a series of other numbers and letters (for example WK7ED3E52C). Only bottles of test strips with the characters 7D, 7E, 7F, or 7G in the third and fourth position in the sequence are affected. Bottles with a lot number including 7J through 7M after WK are not affected and need not be returned."

Possible incorrect blood sugar level readings:

The problem with these lots is that they have shown a tendency to provide the diabetes patient with a blood sugar reading that's higher than what it actually is. Studies have shown that the rate of over-reporting ranges between 5% and 17%. Clearly, having an inaccurate measurement of a diabetic's blood sugar levels is extremely dangerous, as it could lead to unnecessary insulin injections and the resulting side effects.

The reason stated for this problem is that it is yet to be determined, but Bayer Diabetes Care is offering refunds for the product and has ensured the general public that the company has implemented additional quality control steps in order to minimize the risk of any additional problems arising in the future.

If you have been using these products, you need to discontinue their use immediately and seek medical attention. If you have been harmed as a result of this defect, you need to contact a defective products attorney as soon as possible in order to schedule an initial consultation and to begin the process of evaluating and, if necessary and advisable, enforcing your legal rights. How to Proceed if Injured from a Bayer Test Strip:

If you are a diabetic, you face daily challenges that must be overcome in order to maintain your health and long-term viability. Recent innovations and advancements have been a tremendous aid for those who struggle with this disease, but with any advancement, it seems, comes a necessary risk and the resulting consequences.

Such appears to be the case with a product that's manufactured and distributed by Bayer Diabetes Care, and the products in question are the test strips that are used in conjunction with Bayer's Contour TS Blood Glucose Meter. Specifically, several lots of these strips have been recalled because of their tendency to report a blood sugar reading that's between 5% and 17% too high.

Below is a brief outline of how you should proceed if you've used this product and suffered as a result, and for a specific set of answers that relate to this situation, contact a defective products attorney immediately to schedule an initial consultation.

Step One - Investigation of the Situation

If you're using this product, the first step you need to take is to check the product number on the box of test strips you're using. If that number matches the list of recalled lots, discontinue their use immediately. Subsequent to this step, contact your doctor to schedule an immediate medical evaluation in order to determine if you've been physically harmed as a result of this defect. It is possible that you may have been injured and do not yet realize the damage that's been done as a result.

Overdosing on insulin can have deadly consequences. A patient can go into immediate shock, and begin to shake and convulse violently. If these symptoms, even if minor in nature, continue, the patient will become hypoglycemic and can actually die from not having enough blood sugar in the circulatory system. This is not a situation in which to dawdle - investigate your situation today.

Step Two - Apply the Facts to Your Prospective Legal Rights

If it turns out that you have in fact been harmed as a result of using this product, you need to contact a defective products attorney as soon as possible in order to gain an understanding of your legal rights and options. You owe it to yourself and to those you love to closely examine these rights, as any injury you have suffered will most likely lead to physical, emotional and financial consequences, and liability laws exist in order to make sure that those responsible for releasing unnecessarily dangerous products onto the market are held justifiably accountable.
